Medicare

I will support all measures to maintain the Medicare benefits enjoyed by current recipients.

Like Social Security, the cost of Medicare health care benefits for Americans older than 65 has continued to climb in recent years. Not only does Medicare pay for new and more expensive health care procedures, but as the life expectancy of healthy Americans continues to increase, the cost of Medicare increases. Additional programs and benefits such as the Part D prescription drug benefit also increase program costs. As with Social Security, sweeping reform in Medicare is a must- and the sooner, the better. The challenge, again, will be to make the necessary changes to improve efficiency and effectiveness without adding burdens to recipients or taxpayers in the years ahead.

As with Social Security, we must work hard as a Congress to make sure that the promises made in the past will be kept.
