2008 Congress and Social Security BenefitsThere is growing concern over Congress having their own private "not in trouble" social security as well as many other benefits. These are all items paid for by the taxpayers, the same taxpayers who do not have access to these same benefits nor "security" in their social security. It is time for congress to roll their social security into the general fund and receive any benefits from it in the same manner as the remainder of the US. Where do you stand on this? KC ResponseActually, this is no longer true. Prior to January 1, 1984, no member of Congress or federal civil servant was required to pay Social Security taxes. However, they also could not receive any benefits from the Social Security Administration. After January 1, 1984, all members of Congress and all federal civil servants were required to pay Social Security taxes, and also participate in a retirement plan, the Federal Employee's Retirement System, which coordinates with Social Security to provide retirement benefits. In general, however, I do agree with you that no member of Congress should ever receive better benefits than any other federal employee.

2008 Higher Education Campaign PromisesWhen Clinton was in office, he said that anyone who wanted a higher education would get it, yet my son, who had not lived at home in over four years, could not receive any Federal aid. What are your thoughts on that type of an issue?ResponseUnfortunately, making promises such as this in order to get votes has been a problem for many of our elected officials over the years. I experienced the same problem with funding my education as your son in 1981 after I returned home after completing my first four-years in the Air Force. I did apply for and received a student loan which I repaid after I graduated. I believe that there are many options available for student aid, whether it be through federal, state, or private agencies. I do think; however, that these options need to be more obvious, more accessible, and simplified in order to encourage everyone who wants a post-secondary education to find a way to make it happen.

2008 Social Security during Election YearsWhat is your position on Social Security.... it only seems to be in trouble during election years?ResponseGreat point- I agree that this routinely becomes an issue during an election, but not much is accomplished in between. (As you know I have never run for elected office and had the opportunity to try to make a difference.) It is a difficult issue, since we have so many people who depend on Social Security for their retirement benefits - but we also have young people who may not receive the same benefits when they reach retirement age if the system is not changed. My position on Social Security is spelled out on my webpage under "Viewpoints".

2008 Raising TaxesDo you believe in raising taxes for whatever reason?ResponseI would never vote to increase anyone's taxes unless there was an urgent national emergency, such as an attack on our home soil. I believe that the federal government collects far too much of our hard earned money in the form of taxes, and I also believe there is significant waste in the federal government that absolutely must be addressed.

2008 Taking Money from PACsIf elected, do you plan on taking money from PACS that are supportive of non-Christian prinicples like McHenry does? The $7500 from Anheuser Busch and the National Association of Beer and Wine Distributors he accepted does not sit well with me. I am a Christian Conservative and would expect a self procalimed Christian like McHenry to shy away from such controversial donations.ResponseI would not purposely or knowingly take any money from PACS that support anything that goes against my Christian principles and values. In fact, I will not accept any money from PACS that do not have a specific interest in our district. I want to always be able to vote for what is best for our people- without compromising my Christian values and the principles that I learned while growing up here. The beer and wine issue is controversial in and of itself. My wife and I choose not to drink, and we don't serve alcohol in our home. I do not believe that it is necessarily wrong for someone who is of legal drinking age to consume alcohol in a responsible manner. However, I know that many others believe that any alcohol consumption is wrong, and I respect that opinion as well. I do believe that the abuse of alcohol can be devastating on many levels, and I support strict consequences for persons who violate our laws concerning alcohol use. On that note, I have been very concerned with the fact that when one of my opponent's staff members was caught drinking and driving in September, the staff member was only given a "two-week suspension" from work. I will tell you now that I expect any person who works with me to be above reproach in every aspect of their lives. If someone is arrested for a DWI (or any other crime) they will be gone from my staff- no questions asked.

2008 The Bill of Rights and the Second AmendmentHow do you feel about the Bill of Rights.....yes, especially the Second Amendment.....and preserving the Constitution as it was written?ResponseClearly our founding fathers and the original colonies felt that the Bill of Rights was critical to insuring that the federal government did not become too oppressive. During my career as an attorney, I have personally defended and fought for many individual's rights as spelled out in these amendments. I strongly support the Second Amendment, and believe in the individual's right to keep and bear arms. When this amendment was written, it was considered every man's duty to have arms with which to protect himself and his family, and also to protect our nation against attack if necessary. I believe that we have too many gun-control laws which only serve to restrict law-abiding citizens without doing anything to deter criminals from obtaining weapons with which to commit crimes. I do not believe that additional gun-control laws will have any benefit in deterring crime. Some of our gun control laws are ineffective because they are unenforceable until after a crime has been committed. Why should we expect a criminal who is planning to commit a violent crime to worry about whether he has obtained his weapon legally?? If he kills someone and is charged with murder, I doubt if he will be concerned with an additional charge of obtaining a weapon without a license! We absolutely must find a way to stop violent crime without restricting the rights of our law-abiding citizens. We need to support and defend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights as they were written and intended to be used by our founding fathers.

2008 Overpriced Health CareWe are a family of 6 and our insurance is through my husbands job. We pay over $500.00 monthly for health insurance. Our insurance does not cover many things. I have a locked TMJ- My mouth does not open wide enough to eat a cheeseburger or a normal bite of food on a fork. My insurance will not cover treatment, It is $5,000.00. My son needs braces- oh..no coverage for that either we have dental insurance as well, the cost for that $2000.00 that is the first phase of treatment. We must pay all of that out of pocket! Insurance in America is a joke. We do not have a choice. Our insurance pays for regular checkups and most ER visits(we pay $150)what is the plan for fixing this? ResponseI'm very sorry that you have to go through such suffering, no-one should have to go through the difficulties you have experienced just to obtain health care.
